If Obama Truly Embraced Social Media

The online team for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign has been touted for their innovation time and again. Three million people donated money to the campaign online. Five million followed him on Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. His email list was 13 million strong, a figure that would make any direct marketing company jealous. Yet in all of Obama’s official online musings, he sounded very much like a politician. His Twitter posts were at times, dare we say, boring. Not that we would expect him to come across in any other fashion.

But let’s pretend for a moment that Obama leveraged his social media presence with a bit more flare, a bit more “geek.” What if he came off more like an every day social media user? In the spirit of KoldCast’s “Grass Roots,” a web series that takes an offbeat look at the inner workings of a political campaign, we thought we’d flesh out Obama’s social media presence a bit. Who knows? Maybe one day soon he’ll even open up an account on RedTube.
