The History of Geek Movie Directors
They may be picked on in real life, but portrayals of geeks are ingrained in some of the most endearing and popular movies of all time. Ever since Charlie Chaplin revealed what is arguably cinema’s most famous social outcast, The Tramp, we have laughed and cried as one outsider after another has experienced the pain of wedgies, the awkwardness of meeting the opposite sex, and the joy of a first love. As time has progressed, an increasing number of directors have spotlighted the geek as the core subject of their oeuvre – yes, we said oeuvre. Everyone from Woody Allen to Mike Judge has applied their own unique flair, encouraging audiences to not only embrace their inner geek, but to create their own versions.
And so, it was only a matter of time before new media filmmakers, like those behind our very own series “MacAwesome“, brought the geek from the movie theater and television to the PC (which, of course, can be hooked back up to the television). In the same way that Chaplin’s Tramp and Apatow’s 40-year-old virgin struggled to fit into their own worlds, so too does MacAwesome struggle with the force of his own geekdom. And it’s a thrill to watch. In tribute to geeks of yesterday and today, big screen and laptop screen alike, we present you below with a timeline of film directors who have made it their business to tell the story of geek culture.
