Strap on “Blue Movies”

Strap-on genitals, dildos in every corner, and real-life porn stars? Its business as usual on the set of Blue Movies, the hot new web series on KoldCast TV. The much talked about show evolved when writer/director Scott Brown met actor Jareb Dauplaise, as he was holding an audition at USC’s Film School several years ago. Jareb had had more than a brush with the porn industry, having previously roomed with a couple of porn stars. “It was like Halloween every day, but with less costume… actually a lot less costumes.” Conversations ensued about the whacky world of the porn film industry, and eventually gave rise (all puns intended) to the creation of Blue Movies.
Although the series itself is shot “in-studio, our bonus trailer spoofs were a bit more daring, and required location shoots. With no budget for permits, it was filming, guerrilla style. “You can only imagine,” said director Brown, “half-naked actors walking around in a park where children play? It was critical to get these scenes done on the first take… before the police arrived.”
The series reflects the behind-the-scenes story of people who make their living in the porn industry, where sex isn’t taboo…and very little money is spent on wardrobe. But in spite of the rather lascivious subject matter, this is a comedy. And for Brown and Dauplaise, who share writing credits, they like to describe this foray into series television as 30 Rock meets Boogie Nights. “Humor transcends everything,” says Brown, “and it doesn’t really matter what the topic is. Life is a comedy, if you think about it… the biggest joke being that you die. Comedy is about truth… the world is insane, and we all need to find the humor in it.”
For lead actor Jareb Dauplaise, playing porn director Max Chapman has given him the chance to bring the flavor of this hidden porn world to life. And who are this series’ viewers? “We don’t care if they’re 16 or 60, as long as they’re laid back and want to have fun. Porn is such a scary subject, but we go around the edges and bring a little levity to a very taboo subject.”
Dauplaise has already racked up an impressive and diverse résumé. With parts on Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and HBO’s hit series Entourage, he’s also broken into films. After shooting Transformers 2 with director Michael Bay, he headed for Spain, and the Tom Hanks production of My Life in Ruins with Nia Vardalos and Richard Dreyfuss… an Academy Award-winning actor who took him under his wing. He’s also done Meet the Spartans with Carmen Electra, and is currently shooting the MTV series Hard Times with director David Katzenberg. Not bad for a guy so young.
To date, three of the first five finished episodes have aired, but the viewer response has been a loud cry for “more, more, more”. Both Brown and Dauplaise see this series eventually making its way to cable or network television, but consider the web an essential proving ground, where our fans give immediate feedback. And the web, they say, gives them a real chance to push the proverbial envelope. The series has already produced somewhat of a cult following, and has garnered the attention of those who actually make their living in the porn industry. “Real life porn star Tory Lane appears in Episode 4, and we’ve got former and current adult film stars lined up to be in the show”, says Brown. “But it’s our strong storylines and characters which will keep audiences coming back.”
“Scott brings the concept to life with his brilliant writing and directing,” says Dauplaise. “I just bring the seasoning.” Yes, and some spicy seasoning, it is. And for the son of a second grade schoolteacher, Dauplaise notes, “who ever dreamed I’d be making a living doing shower scenes with porn stars?” Yup, all in a day’s work.

New episodes of Blue Movies are released every 10 days.
