Terrifying Futures In Film

Twelve Monkeys, 1984, Children of Men. These are just a few of the cult favorites that have presented us with chilling versions of the future over the years. While sometimes these futures contain distant hypotheticals, other times they resonate with contemporary truths that are tied intrinsically to our deepest fears and emotions. Such movies that prophesize dark futures are certainly not for everyone, but they have nonetheless found passionate audiences who preach their gospel at midnight screenings, on blogs, and even at the occasional Blade Runner convention. Our own KoldCast series, Tyranny, is a new addition to the genre, telling the story of “an artist in need of a breakthrough who mystically acquires knowledge of a corporate coup d’etat occurring in the near future.” To be brief, the series is kinda mind-bending. With countries around the world, America included, in varying states of unrest, we thought it an appropriate time, now more than ever, to take a look into the future. Will there be machines running the Earth in 10 years? An apocalyptic plague? Probably not, but time will tell. The graphic below examines some of the most frightening futures ever depicted in film.

(Note: We realize The Matrix is more about an alternate reality than a future, per se, but it is just too awesome of a film to leave out.)
