12 Fascinating Public Breakups

Breakups. Most of us have been on the receiving end or the delivery end. For some, maybe both ends. Neither way is easy. No matter how it goes down, we suffer a sense of loss and possibly some emotional damage. In some cases, for a variety of irrational reasons, we try to keep in contact with our former significant other. Perhaps the reasoning is self-induced, or maybe it’s for reasons out of our immediate control. With the current economic situation so tough, some couples are breaking up, but are forced to live together out of economic need. That’s precisely the reality for Travis and Celeste in Bunny Hug.

Living with the object of your anguish can be brutal enough, but can you imagine having your breakup broadcast across the entire world? Imagine the headache and heartache – your breakup recorded and shared on the Internet – headlines splashed across the fronts of grocery store tabloids. In most cases, after the dust fully settles, the “event” can be remembered with a chuckle or nostalgic feeling. But for the public, while the “news” is in full bloom, its pure entertainment fodder, and all one can do is to absorb the brunt of it.

It may be salacious. It may be uncouth. But you have to admit, you were fascinated when angelic golf wunderkind Tiger Woods fell from grace. So, to remind you of that fascinated feeling, here’s my list of 12 painful public breakups that are more captivating than a high-speed chase.

1. DUMPED ON DANNY DUMPS

Apparently there is a radio show across the pond called “Danny Dumps,” where the radio show is also proficient in rendering personal services. Yes, the radio show host breaks up with one party in the relationship, at the request of the other. In the example below, after a would-be fiancé gets caught cheating with her boss, the radio show host pulls a hilariously cruel prank. She deserved everything she got.

2. KEVIN FEDERLINE AND BRITNEY SPEARS BREAK UP

Kevin Federline and Brittney Spears once starred in the TV show that started the entire celebrity couple reality show trend… and then they had troubles that led to their breakup. I sometimes wonder if these two actually stayed together just for purposes of the show.  Not that far-fetched really.

3. YOUTUBE BREAKUP

Even the YouTube generation gets their heart broken.  It’s just a little more public, dramatic and mean than in the past.

5. TIGER WOODS AND ELIN NORDEGREN BREAK UP

The Tiger Woods scandal and subsequent break up was so public that it even became part of the sports world media circus. Can you imagine being caught cheating on your wife multiple times, being called a sex addict, hearing EVERYONE talk about it, keeping most your million dollar sports sponsorships intact and still be recognized as a golf rock star?  I know; it sounds kinda awesome – but not for wife, Elin.

Is Twitter the new tabloid?  If so, at least we can beat the paparazzi to the punch and deliver the news the way we want to.  And it could be the perfect way to increase your Twitter following too.  Just ask Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy about their very public announcement over Twitter.  While it was all written with smiles and merry wishes, one cannot help but wonder if this is how it all really went down.

Well, this is actually news to me. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, aka Brangelina, is THE Hollywood power couple you cannot escape.  They are consistently plastered on the cover of every tabloid magazine for their new babies, new film roles and new hairstyles. You cannot look down a grocery isle without seeing their faces.  Ever since the two got together, there’s been talk of them breaking up.  With two huge personalities and a boat full of kids, this couple must be struggling to keep it together and keep it fresh.  But to have everyone waiting for you to break up while monitoring your every fight…

12.  THE PITT / ANISTON BREAKUP

In 2005, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston went through a highly publicized breakup. It is FIVE FREAKIN’ YEARS later and we still can’t escape a check out line without seeing some kind of headline revolving around their half-a-decade-old relationship. Just like the fascination with Brangelina, tabloid readers seem to be holding their breath wtih hope that Jennifer will get her Brad back.
