From the 1994’s camp biopic Ed Wood, starring Johnny Depp as the real life transvestite filmmaker, to Kenan Thompson playing a very convincing Whoopi Goldberg, men have been dressing like women since they realized that skirts can be quite liberating… and we have watched in fascination.
When Robin Williams transformed into Mrs. Doubtfire in the 1993 film by the same name, it wasn’t just the makeup, wig, wardrobe and boobs that kept us fascinated but the whole transformation of voice, persona and mannerisms. He became her. Many of you may never have heard of Barry Humphries, the Australian actor, comedian and satirist. But, if I mention his brilliant comic portrayal of journalist, talk show host and icon Dame Edna, his/her image immediately comes to mind. What do these women have in common? Big hair, full bosoms and lots of accessories. In fact, some of them sport some sexy legs! (Remember John Leguizamo in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar?) For a more Paula Dean-esque take on drag, there’s domestic diva Carol Ann McCracken from the series McCracken Live! – a behind-the-scenes look at a man who lands his own do-it-yourself show playing his salty-tongued female alter ego, Carol Ann.
If a man as hairy as Robin Williams or as muscular as Wesley Snipes can rock a dress, perhaps there are more men out there that should consider the look. Here’s 12 men that could pull it off without much effort.
McCracken Live! – Pilot
1. Justin Bieber
With his recently announced line of nail polish and a legal entanglement for allegedly punching a twelve year old, Justin Bieber is a prime candidate for drag. As noted on Totallylookslike.com, he already looks like Juno actress Ellen Page.
2. Taylor Lautner
When women use the term beautiful, not handsome, who comes to mind? For me, that would be the popular star who plays Jacob in the Twilight Saga, Taylor Lautner. Not just a pretty face. He also has an incredibly athletic build. He started his training in the martial arts as a child, but it was between the first and second Twilight films that he gained thirty pounds of muscle. Men’s Health magazine called him a “rippled fitness animal.” Named one of People Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People in 2009, he fascinates both men and women.
3. Robert Pattinson
This 24-year-old London-born actor plays one-third of the acting triumvirate in the hugely popular Twilight series. Said to be involved with actress Kristen Stewart who plays Bella in the series, Robert Pattinson remains intensely private and publicity shy. Known for his bed head and scruffy facial hair, he is also a model and a musician/songwriter. He plays guitar and piano and has composed for the Twilight soundtrack. In 2010, Pattinson was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in The World. In the same year, Forbes ranked him as one of the most powerful celebrities in the world. So it is no surprise that people have become obsessed with him. A bad boy with a brooding musical background – that combination is asking for a little make-up at least.
4. Zac Efron
Although he is best known for the High School Musical films, Zac Efron is headed for a major acting career. Piercing blue eyes and trim build, he’s got a rapid fanbase, a hot girlfriend (Vanessa Hudgens) and a head of hair men and women would kill for. Anyone who spends that much time on his hair, deserves the opportunity to show us what he can do with some strappy shoes and a little black dress.
5. Kanye West
Although most men in hip-hop love to advertise the intensity of their masculinity, Kanye West is notorious for keeping us guessing. There has been much written about Kanye questioning his sexuality. Still, the man himself admits he has a feminine side and credits it to maternal influence, having been raised by his mother. With thousand-dollar suits and shoes and some spectacular accessories, West might want to keep us talking about him by wearing Chanel to the next MTV Music Awards. “I’m sorry Beyoncé, but Kayne West is wearing one of the best dresses of all time.”
6. Ashton Kutcher
Self-proclaimed President of Pop Culture. Actor. Producer. Television host. Married to hot MILF Demi Moore. And, sadly, the ever-reputable Star magazine has reported that a 21-year-old girl is claiming to have slept with Kutcher. While he is denying the veracity of the report, Kutcher and Moore have fled to Israel where they are reportedly working on their marriage. Perhaps they need to try something new? We already know that Demi Moore (aka GI Jane) can kick any man’s ass. But can Kutcher strut on the catwalk with the best of them?
7. Tiger Woods
We all know the story. Tiger was a child prodigy, coached by his beloved father. He became the number one golfer in the world, perhaps of all time. At one point he was the highest paid professional athlete of all time. Some say he is the greatest athlete of all time. He married gorgeous blond, Swedish nanny Elin Nordegrin. Then he got caught cheating. Seriously, you’re married to a Swedish nanny and you cheat on her? Men everywhere are baffled. Maybe Tiger should try his hand at cross-dressing to shake the current black cloud over his head. Who knows, with a baby face like that maybe Avon will come knocking with a sponsorship deal?
8. Spencer Pratt
The half of ‘Speidi’ we all love to hate, Spencer Pratt, is an example of someone who won’t admit his fifteen minutes of fame are up. Still, he continues to shock us to keep in the game. Sadly, we always take the bait. How about earning those extra minutes with a real shocker? How about borrowing some of Heidi’s clothes and having a go with Brody Jenner – two metrosexual men, exposing their feminine sides? Go ahead, we won’t judge. We’ll just gossip.
McCracken Live!, The Mail Bag – Ep. 2
9. Josh Duhamel
Josh Duhamel was mostly famous for being a soap opera actor on All My Children. When he left the Show in 2002, he took a role in the TV series Vegas. Steven Spielberg also cast him as a lead in The Transformers, and he reprised that role in the sequel. In 2009, he married Stacy Ferguson, better known as Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas. He’s played the bad boy. He’s been the bad boy – most recently he was caught cheating on Fergie with a stripper. Still, he dons a keen fashion sense and a well-coifed hairdo. With all that testosterone to go around, I think Duhamel might benefit from sporting some of Fergie’s more dangerous heals and talking a walk in her shoes. Who knows, maybe there’s remake of Tootsie in it for him.
10. LeBron James
At 18, before graduating from high school, LeBron James was chosen as the NBA’s number one draft pick and signed with his hometown favorites, the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his 2003-2004 season, he was named Rookie of the Year. He has been an NBA All-Star every season since 2005, and NBA MVP in his two most recent seasons with the Cavs. He became a role model to millions. He was active in charity work, and he was a leader in every way, inspiring legions of fans. After the 2010 season, he became a free agent. It was around this time that the love between Cleveland, OH and James would begin to decompose. After his decision to move to Miami, hate was born. Still, LeBron is part of Cavalier history. Maybe its time to start the healing process. And what can be less threatening and more nurturing than LeBron in a sunflower Muumuu and a warm cup of tea? See, it’s already working.
11. Bruce Willis
When Bruce Willis was being considered for the role of John McClane in Die Hard, people looked at the funny man from Moonlighting and thought, “He’s a soft, funny, romantic-comedy guy. He can’t do action.” And thus was born one of the biggest action stars and action movie franchises ever. Whatever happened to that young boy who loved to seduce Cybil Shepherd? He’s there. He’s just bald now. He once dressed in Shakespearean clothing in an episode of Moonlighting. And isn’t that three quarters of the way to drag anyway? Common Bruce, let’s relive what Time Magazine calls one of the best TV Shows of All Time.
12. Russell Brand
Russell Brand is at the peak of his popularity right this very moment. It is said that comedy comes from dark minds, and Russell has the background to prove it. He was sexually abused as a child, was bulimic, had a very sickly mother, and after his parents divorced, often lived a lonely life. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts while addicted to heroin, alcohol and sex. Soon after, he began his career as a stand-up comic. This brought him fame, and eventually he went to rehab. He has been sober since 2002, and he now a member of Judd Apatow’s creative group and is about to marry one of the hottest pop stars on the planet, Katy Perry. He’s a bright, honest and funny guy, who lives outside the norm. With his long, unkempt hair and his flamboyant and unflattering personal style, he’s already half way to rock and roll diva. Give him a push up bra and a pair of platform shoes and glam rock is born again! (Perhaps we’re ready for a sequel to Hedwig and the Angry Inch starring Mr. Brand?)
Honorable Mentions: Rob Lowe, James Franco, Jared Leto, and Chris Brown. Who’s on your list?
McCracken Live!, The Red Carpet – Ep. 3
McCracken Live!, Carol Ann McCracken: Behind The Beauty – Ep. 4
Jojo Balogh is something of a pop culture legend in her own mind, and those of her friends. She was number one on their list of people to use as phone-a-friends on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. In addition to her now defunct personal blog, she also wrote training materials for recruiters and headhunters, as well as love letters, and emails to school teachers and administrators regarding her teenage son… in an effort to encourage them not to charge him with truancy.
