Avatar more closely resembles Fern Gully than Dances With Wolves:

1) cartoony / primarily for children / pretty
2) most of the good guys were non-human
3) magical world
4) magic tree god
5) riding horse-like and bird-like creatures
6) no language barrier

This is not right.

Three of those films; The Ring, Let The Right One In, and Slumdog Millionaire were all very successful books before being made into a film. Here is the pitch for each, "It made money as a book and I think it will make money as a movie."

Alien had a pitch good enough to nearly make it O'Bannon's directorial debut. Dan O'Bannon was on his way to sigh the contract to make it as "Star Beast" for Roger Corman. A small time softcore porn producer cajoled him and Shusett into a meeting at Fox where they were looking for a followup hit after Star Wars.

The pitch for The Matrix involved all sorts of large comic book style art renderings and leave behinds that helped make all the sci-fi jumbo visual. The eastern philosophy stuff, while present in the script, is not the first thing that jumped out at people in the meetings. Keanu Reeves was attached to the film after it was green lit they decided Donnie Yen didn't have enough pull for a major film in America. Also, every major action film's main character in Hollywood is a Jesus clone. Please see Joseph Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces".

Most of the other films listed has a big name director attached as writer or the person that spearheaded the project, meaning they were less a pitch and more a studio package that was formed.

While you do have passion for the films you mentioned, you should funnel that towards fact checking before making comments.
