23 of the Nerdiest Real Life Superheroes
Superheroes, even the ones from other planets, represent the best aspects of humanity. They are the strongest, the fastest, and the smartest in their fictional worlds, and they often have powers that us normal folk can only dream of. So it’s no surprise that the nerds among us (ourselves included) often aspire to be like these powerful characters. But for some, it goes beyond a simple affinity. Many nerds take their superhero worship to the extreme, crafting intricate costumes to complete their fantasy worlds. Inspired by KoldCast’s resident big-haired, crime-fighting superhero, Johnny Raikou , we thought we’d pay homage to those nerdy individuals among us who go the extra mile and actually look the part of their favorite characters. Here are 24 of the nerdiest real-life superheroes. This one’s for you, Raikou.
1. Butter-Knife Wolverine
In this image, Photobucket user “Orcho500” shows us his own version of Wolverine. The facial hair needs a little work, but the claws look surprisingly legitimate considering they’re obviously just butter knives tied to his hands.
2. Super Kool-Aid
As Crave writer Dave Shilling points out, when it comes to superhero costumes, it’s important to think outside the box. That’s why Shilling was so impressed with this guy’s outfit. It’s cheap, inventive, and heroic, at least from a thirst-fighting standpoint.
3. Doc Spectral?
Whoever posted this superhero photo to PhotoBucket went by the name of “docspectral.” There’s also a “Doc Spectral” listed at the World Superhero Registry. Coincidence? Pshaw.
4. Ken the Elvis Storm Trooper
Many people think that Ken the Elvis Storm Trooper is just a myth. These people need to visit his website. If you’re lucky enough to see him at any of the various comic or sci-fi conventions he attends, be sure to take a picture so you can prove to your friends he’s real.
5. The Green Something!
Green Lantern? Green Arrow? Who cares? This superhero was having a great time at Norwescon, the northwest’s premier science fiction and fantasy convention.
6. Jewish Wolverine
Comic book fanatic Joey Devilla took two weeks off from his accounting job to make this Wolverine costume that speaks to his religious identity. Check out more details on his blog “The Adventures of Accordion Guy in the 21st Century.”
7. Plunger Girl
A woman with a Flickr acount named “Sezrahnz” had some free time and decided to make her own superhero costume. Quick, Plunger Girl! To the 99 Cent Store for more tin foil!
8. VIP
Emma Frost? Or Snow White? Either way, this Comic Con VIP is looking heroic. Carry on, you sexy beast!
9. Fat Batman
The people at Unreality.com wondered what happens when superheroes just sort of give up on the whole “hero” thing and really let themselves go. This picture was their answer.
10. Miss 1974 Crime Fighting Hot Mama
I would name this superhero “Miss 1974 Crime Fighting Hot Mama.” She’s fighting crime and transcending time! Either that, or she’s just a stripper.
11. Baby Joker
I couldn’t track down any information on this horrifying picture, but one thing is clear: I wish I’d been wearing a diaper when I found it. It’s definitely one of the best joker impersonations we’ve found online.
12. Used Electronics Man
“Used Electronics Man” was the winner of the Wired.com 2008 Superhero Costume Contest. Ryan Peters built the suit out of old electronics parts while taking summer classes in college.
13. Super Sex?
Flickr users “Chris and Lauren” take a break from their costume party to show you how superheroes are really made.
14. Hot Supernerd
Enigma Arcana Designs put together this photo shoot with model Amy Beauchamp in which she’s wearing a superhero outfit while eating a tubesteak. It has something to do with a British TV show called “No Heroics.” Any show with hot girls in superhero costumes eating tubesteaks is alright by us.
15. Take a Break
As this picture from the Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle shows us, even Aquaman needs a break.
16. Soup-er-Man!
Dennis Duffy, proprietor of the Carolina Runner Blog, took part in the 2009 Superhero 5k at the Asheville Brewing Company in Asheville, NC.
17. Link
Flickr user “Gabdar” represents the Legend of Zelda by dressing as Link at her friend’s costume party.
18. Custom Made
If designer Nicole Beckett isn’t busy with a TV project, she might just make you a custom-made superhero costume like this one.
19. Sexy Jedi Nerd
This picture from Hawtness.com just goes to show that not all homemade costumes have to be simple.
20. Cruise Woman!
Flickr user “Olivia” made a promise that she would wear a homemade superhero costume if she won a cruise in some content. Luckily, she did win the cruise, and posted the consequences online.
21. Makeup Girl!
Everyday crazy-person/Flickr user Anna Fischer snapped this photo at last year’s Marvel Costume Contest in Union Square Park. An intricate makeup job is the trademark of a true hero/villain.
22. The Diagrammer
Brandy Agerbeck (a.k.a. Flickr user loosetooth) is a graphic facilitator in Chicago by day. But by night, she’s “The Diagrammer!” There’s nothing a venn diagram or 2×2 matrix can’t solve.
23. Super Activism
Most superheroes prefer to live shrouded in mystery. But as Canadian Alistair Henning points out, other superheros are more interested in fighting voter apathy…at least in Calgary.
