5 Female Celebrities with Behavior Problems1

By Ryan Rosado, Feb 21, 2012 in Pop Culture

In recent times we’ve seen Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson and Kanye West make headlines for their outrageous antics, but what about female celebrities who cause a ruckus with their behavior problems. Some of these gals can give Kanye and Charlie a run for their money with the way they cause a scene. It’s safe to say, most of these ladies’ behavior problems can be attributed to their upbringings and life situations. The makings of girls with behavior problems can be seen in the popular Internet television series, “Miss Behave” where the protagonist, Tori Archer, is on the path to troubled teenage behavior problems resulting from absentee parents and peer pressure.

Courtney Love

One female celebrity notorious for behavior problems is none other than rock musician, actress and widow of Curt Cobain of Nirvana, Courtney Love. Having a history of being in correctional facilities as a child and roaming the world with her trust fund, Love began her behavior problems at an early age. Much of this persona was exposed to the public when her band, Hole, released their album “Live Through This” in 1994. The album was released only four days after Cobain’s suicide. During the promotional tour in support of “Living Through This,” Love wore her behavior problems on her sleeve by throwing guitars into the crowd and having screaming fits on stage. And who can forget Love throwing a compact over Madonna’s head during the singer’s 1995 interview at the MTV Video Music Awards. In 2004, Love’s behavioral problems reached a peak when she appeared intoxicated on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and exposed her breasts to him while standing on his desk. Later that evening she performed while intoxicated and was later arrested for possession of a controlled illegal substance. This resulted in her being sentenced to 6 months of lock-down rehab. Nowadays, Love is trying to rid the media of that wild child persona in exchange for a more put together mother and continuing lead singer of Hole.

Shannen Doherty

Best known for her role as Brenda Walsh on “90210”, Shannen Doherty is known for her lashing out and brutally honest character. In 1993, ex-fiancé, Dean Factor filed a protective order against Doherty stating she allegedly told him she would, “Pull a gun on me” and threatened to “hire a few guys to beat me up and sodomize me.” Ouch. In 2001 Doherty was sentenced to either 10 days in jail or 20 days of work-release duty, 3 years probation, and ordered to pay a $1,500 fine for drunk driving charges. More of Doherty’s outlandish behavior was put on the silver screen when she became host of the reality TV show “Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty” on Oxygen. In Breaking Up, Doherty joined forces with people in relationship peril who wanted to get out but just couldn’t seem to do it on their own. The Show didn’t help her image as the original mean girl.

Naomi Campbell

In the super model arena, notorious for her behavior problems is Naomi Campbell. Accused ten times of committing acts of violence towards employees, associates, and in one-instance police officers, Campbell is not someone you want to displease. Campbell’s behavior problems first became public knowledge in 1998 when one of her assistants reported Campbell had thrown a telephone at her. Campbell settled the matter out of court and attended anger management classes to rid her of that nasty phone throwing habit. However, years later, other individuals came forward and reported abusive incidents with Campbell. This included three housekeepers, three assistants, one drug therapist, actress Yvonne Scio, and two police officers at London’s Heathrow Airport. At least people flying British Airways won’t have to suffer the wrath of Ms. Naomi Campbell anymore since she was banned for life after spitting on the two police officers during an argument over her lost luggage.

Avril Lavigne

Just by looking at the punk rock singer Avril Lavigne, one wouldn’t necessarily think of sunshine and blue birds. Behavior problems are not something foreign to the “What the Hell” singer. In 2006, Lavigne graced headlines for spitting at paparazzi and yelling obscenities at them. She even went as far as writing “F#ck Yous!” for autograph seekers while leaving the Hyde in Los Angeles one night in 2006. Avril also was in the news for her bad girl behavior in May 2011 when she performed at the Tampa Bay Rays summer concert series. The singer was booed when her first song was plagued by technical difficulties resulting in the audience not hearing her. Lavigne got very frustrated and started yelling obscenities toward the surrounding crowd. Later that year, Lavigne and her boyfriend Brody Jenner were involved in a bar brawl in New York City due to Lavigne engaging in a verbal altercation with another female at the bar. Five other individuals were involved in the unfortunate assault on Lavigne and Jenner. It’s safe to say the singer has an acid tongue on her.

Serena Williams

What would the world of tennis be like without Serena Williams getting all fired up? The former world #1 by the Women’s Tennis Association has a history for a causing a scene on the court. Most memorable were her behavior problems during the 2009 World Open against Kim Clijsters. Tension began at the end of the first set when Williams slammed her racquet on the court after losing the set. Strike one for racquet abuse. She was given a warning but later got extremely angry with the lineswoman for adding points to Clijsters tally for Williams’ “foot fault” mishap. Williams gestured to the lineswoman and vocalized profanities towards her. Williams was penalized a point for unsportsmanlike conduct and eventually fined $175,000, suspended from the 2010 U.S. Open and other Grand Slam events, and received two years probation. At the 2011 U.S. Open, Williams walked a thin line with opponent Samantha Stosur by shouting “Come on!” over a “forehand” move, which resulted in her opponent gaining a point. Not quite topping her 2009 outburst, Williams did hurl a slew of insults but no profanity at the umpire. Smart choice Serena.

Perhaps the intensity of the spotlight and the constant scrutiny by the media adds fuel to the fire for these female celebrities. Ergo outbursts. But, unfortunately, it comes with the territory of fame and success. What other female celebrities are notorious for their behavior problems? Leave a comment below and share.
